Irish Dance Classes

Recreational, Competitive and Performance classes for all levels of Irish Dance.  Classes for Beginners of all ages from pre-school, teen, and adult.  It's never too late to start Irish dance.  We provide  dancers with an encouraging, positive learning environment where students can achieve individual goals and learn the value of working as a team in safe, family atmosphere.  Our teaching methods are based on Irish tradition and incorporate modern techniques to accelerate learning. ​ Class sizes are limited for individual focus on students and do not exceed an 8 -1 student to teacher ratio. Dancers receive one on one time with instructors and are encouraged to seek their personal best through training, hard work, with support from their instructors and classmates.

FREE TRIAL CLASS

Not sure if your dancer will enjoy Irish dance classes?  You can sign up for a FREE TRIAL CLASS prior to enrolment to make sure you or your dancer wishes to proceed with registration.  Simply proceed with the regular registration process and instead of signing up for the enrolment, select Trial Class.  No registration or lesson fees are processed until your Trial Class is complete and you have confirmed your wish to proceed with seasonal enrolment.

PRESCHOOL AGE 3 - 4

A fun introduction to the basics of Irish Dance with a program specifically for young children. Students explore movement, rhythm, music, and song in an energetic class. Dancers develop coordination, social skills and gain confidence within the studio environment in a small class setting.  With individual focus and attention from our instructors and teaching assistants, preschool students learn the necessary skills required for Irish dance. Children enrolling in our Preschool program should be able manage the class on their own without parent accompaniment.

Dance clothing must allow for non-restrictive movement for safety. Long hair should be tied back at all times. Jewellery should be limited to medical alert. Simple studs for dancers who cannot remove earrings.

Poodle socks (ladies) or Black Dress Socks (men) should be worn to class to insure dance shoes do not over-stretch.

BOTTOMS - Colour Black

Tights, leggings, yoga or dance pants, shorts and dance skirts must be of an appropriate length and not impede with dancers movement. For safety yoga and dance pants must not be longer than ankle length.

TOPS - Colour black

With the exception of Malley School Clothing or Feis-shirts, all dancers should wear plain black tops. Bodysuits, Athletic Tops, and T-shirts are permissible as long as they allow for movement and are not overly large.

Costumes are only required for dancers who wish to perform.

Preschool dancers who are interested in competitive Irish Dance are invited to compete in our local Canada Feile and Canada Open Championship in a non-graded Under 6 competition specific for young beginner Irish dancers. Our local competitions are a great opportunity for dancers to try competitive Irish dance without the burden of travel.

Competition is optional and dancers require a school costume in order to compete.


BEGINNER  AGE 5 - 7

Dancers learn basic Irish Soft shoe technique, rhythm, and timing in a one hour which includes warm up, technique and choreography. Students learn the Basic Bunghrád Reel and learn their first Ceili (group) dance. Dancers develop technique, gain confidence, and social skills in a small class setting. We offer two options for Beginner (5 - 7) classes on Wednesday or Saturday.  Students may choose to register for one class or both lessons.  Hourly discounts apply for the second class enrolment.

Irish Dance Grades

 Once dancers learn the basics in a Beginner class, they move through 5 levels of Irish dance (Bunghrád, Ullmhuchán, Meanghrád, Ardghrád, Craobhghrád).  Each level increases in difficulty and students gain skill and learn the necessary technique with the help of our CRN certified team of instructors. CRN Graded Levels provides structured learning for recreational and competitive Irish dance students and motivates our Irish dancers to the highest levels.


BUNGHRÁD  LEVEL 1

In this 1.25 hr class, students learn 4 the Bunghrád dances (Reel, Slip Jig, Single Jig, Light Jig).  The Level 1 includes warm up, technique and students learn a ceili (group) dance.  Bunghrád lessons focus on developing necessary skill, style, and technique required for more advanced levels of Irish dance and is suitable for both recreational and competitive students of all ages. Hard Shoe technique is also included in the lesson.  Hard Shoes are recommended but not required for this class.  Bunghrád students progress at their own pace and dancers may spend one to three years in Level 1. We offer two options for Bunghrád classes on Wednesday or Saturday.  Students may choose to register for one class or both lessons.  Hourly discounts apply for the second class enrolment.

BUNGHRÁD - ULLMHUCHÁN - MEANGHRÁD

LEVEL 1 - 3

In this 1.5 hr class, students who have learned the 4 Bunghrád dances move on to 5 Ullmhuchán dances (Reel, Slip Jig, Single Jig, Heavy Jig, Hornpipe ) and then 5 Meanghrád (Reel, Slip, Single, Heavy Jig, Hornpipe) The class includes warm up, technique and students learn a ceili (group) dance and is suitable for both recreational and competitive students of all ages. Two levels are combined to allow students to advance easily for each dance. Hard are required for this class.  Ullmhúchán and Meanghrád students progress at their own pace and dancers may spend one to three years in Level 2 and 3. We offer two options for Level 1- 3 classes on Wednesday or Saturday. Students may choose to register for one or multiple weekly lessons.  Hourly discounts apply for multiple class enrolment.

Solo Costume - One dancers have achieved 3 Meanghrád dances they have the option to purchase a solo costume.

ARDGHRÁD - CRAOBHGHRÁD

LEVEL 4 - 5

In this high intensity 3.5 hour class, students learn 5 Ardghrád dances (Reel, Slip Jig, Single Jig, Heavy Jig, Hornpipe ) and contemporary set dances. Within Level 4 and 5 there are increasing degrees of difficulty and dancers require both a high level of skill and athleticism.  Dancers achieve the status of Craobhghrad "Champion" Level 5 by winning a championship with 3 adjudicators. The class is suitable for recreational and competitive students.Dances who wish to have individual steps and choreography take additional private lessons to have material created specifically for them.  We offer three options for Level 4 - 5 classes on Monday, Thursday, and Saturdays  Students may choose to register for one class or multiple lessons per week.  Hourly discounts apply for the second class enrolment.

Dancers should have the required footwear by the end of the first month of classes. We recommend students wait a few classes before they purchase Irish dance shoes in order to ascertain whether or not they intend to continue with lessons. New students may wear socks, well fitting slippers or ballet slippers for the first few weeks of classes.

New Irish Dance Shoes can be ordered on-line from Irish Dance Supply stores.

Second Hand Shoes are an economic option for growing dancers and we have a school Facebook group dedicated to Buy and Sell for Second hand dance shoes and costumes

Dance clothing must allow for non-restrictive movement for safety. Long hair should be tied back at all times. Jewellery should be limited to medical alert. Simple studs for dancers who cannot remove earrings.

Poodle socks (ladies) or Black Dress Socks (men) should be worn to class to insure dance shoes do not over-stretch.

BOTTOMS - Colour Black

Tights, leggings, yoga or dance pants, shorts and dance skirts must be of an appropriate length and not impede with dancers movement. For safety yoga and dance pants must not be longer than ankle length.

TOPS - Colour black

With the exception of Malley School Clothing or Feis-shirts, all dancers should wear plain black tops. Bodysuits, Athletic Tops, and T-shirts are permissible as long as they allow for movement and are not overly large.

Solo Costume - Dancers alsohave the option to purchase a solo costume.

Irish Dance costumes are used for several years, until a dancers grows or advances levels and needs to upgrade. Prime Design orders are placed in October each season. Second Hand Costumes are a good, economic option for growing dancers. We have a school Facebook group dedicated to Buy and Sell for Second Hand Dance Shoes and Costumes.

Costumes are only required for dancers who wish to perform or compete.

ADULT +18

BEGINNER - INTERMEDIATE

In this fun Adult's Only Class, adult students of all ages and abilities are welcome for both Soft Shoe and Hard Shoe Irish Dance.  From new beginner with no dance training to more experience dancers, all students are welcome in this fun and social "Adults Only" atmosphere.  New dancers will learn the basics with the Bunghrad (Beginner) Reel, Slip Jig, Single Jig, and Light Jig and then move on to more advanced steps with Ullmhuchan (Level 2) and Meanghrad (Level 3).  Dancers learn Ceilis (group dance) and figure dances with choreography.  The  Adult class is suitable for recreational and competitive students and all Adult dancers are welcome to perform at any of our annual events.  This class is suitable for all ages and and fitness levels.  Adult dancers who wish to compete are encourage to also enrol in our Level 1 - 5 classes for a class geared towards competitive goals.

CEILI & TEAMS

Recreational and Competitive dancers of all levels and ages.

Learn CRN Traditional Ceili (Group) dances for both Recreation and Competition in a fun atmosphere and be a part of our award winning Ceili teams. Ceilis include traditional 2,3, 4, 6, 8, and16 Hand group dances found in Oide Damhsa, the CRN céilí book in addition to modern Freestyle and Dance Drama productions.

Stay in shape, develop fitness, increase flexibility and strength.

Come prepared to work hard with this high energy, 30 minute strength and training workout gear for Irish dance. PERFORMANCE TEAMS

Dedicated dancers who love to perform and have great team spirit

Performance dancers become part of a family who travel the world to perform & make lifelong friendships. Performance team practices are held from September to August and students register for the entire 12 Month dance Season.  Dancers must be available for performances throughout the season.
